As a disaster-prone country, Indonesian must prepare wor the worst possibilities when natural disasters occur in their surroundings. Indonesian have to prepare emergency stuff, line of communication and evacuation mechanisms when natural disasters happened.

Previously, we have talked about how Indonesian’s awareness of facing potential natural disasters in another article. Here’s the article:

The Indonesian archipelago is constantly at risk of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, and tsunamis. There is at least one significant volcanic eruption and one major earthquake in the country every year since it is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire,. A large tsunami can occur once in every five years. On average, at least one major natural disaster has occurred in Indonesia every month since the 2004 tsunami, including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and events caused by climate change.

By this, Indonesia must remain in a constant state of natural disaster preparedness, as the country sometimes experiences multiple disasters in a single year. This time, we would like to focus more on what emergency stuffs that mostly prepared by Indonesian. Is it food and drinks communication devices? or other? take a look at the survey!

Q. How big is your concern about natural disasters that are likely to occur? (SA)

We can see that 64.4% of respondents claimed that their concern about natural disasters is very high. The other 29.8% of respondents also claimed that their concern about natural disasters is quite big.
There were only 5% of respondents whose concern about natural disasters is not big.

Based on this result, most Indonesian claimed to have a concern about natural disasters. In mind, Indonesian have a concern about natural disasters threaten their surroundings.

Q. Please choose from the choices below what natural disasters are most likely to happen around you. (MA)

Like in the previous survey, 39.14% of respondents said that heavy rain is the most probable disaster that may happen, while other 36.78% said that flooding is also the most probable disaster as well. About 26% of respondents afraid of earthquakes and tsunami, while 20.74% of respondents think that fire is also risky in Indonesia.

By this result, most Indonesian think that rain-related natural disasters were the most probable disaster that may happen.

Q. Have you prepared emergency stuff that useful while natural disasters occur? (SA)

Most Indonesian with a percentage of 79.2% said they had prepared emergency useful stuff. This percentage is quite a relief considering the threat of natural disasters that occur in this country is very high.

Even though most Indonesian already prepared emergency stuff if natural disasters happened, unluckily, 20.8% of respondents had not prepared any emergency stuff if natural disasters occurred.

We asked multiple-answered questions regarding what kind of stuff that most Indonesian prepared for a natural disaster. Based on the result, we conclude that three main things prepared by the Indonesian family.

1. Flashlight

According to this result, the most prepared stuff for a natural disaster by Indonesian is a flashlight or emergency lamp, with a percentage of 36.01%. Well, a flashlight is a must. Most of the natural disasters that happened in Indonesia cause electricity turn-off. When the night comes, lights fade off as well as the electricity shutdown. In this situation emergency lamps will come in handy for requesting aid or even to find missing victims. The flashlight is also the easiest preparation that every family can get.

2. Food and Drinks

The second most prepared emergency stuff is drinking water with a percentage of 35.03%, and foods with a percentage of 32.88%. Drinking water and instant food also easy to be prepared for an emergency natural disaster situation, especially instant food. Sometimes, the Indonesian government is late in giving aid for disaster victims due to bad bureaucracy or simply because the disaster location is hard to reach. With this condition, the family should stock some food for an emergency.

3. Blanket or Body Warmer

As we know, a rain-related disaster such as flooding is a disaster that most likely predicted will happen by Indonesian. In the flood, it is hard to find dry clothes to keep the body warm. That’s why blankets or other body warmers are also prepared by most of Indonesian.

Unfortunately, there were still 30.53% of respondents who did not prepare emergency stuff for natural disasters.

Q. Have you ensured a shelter or evacuation spot if there was a natural disaster around your place? (SA)

According to the result, 59% of respondents said they had ensured a shelter or evacuation spot if natural disasters happened. This number is quite big, but still not enough for a disaster-prone country.

There is a decent 35.2% of respondents who still had not prepared any shelter or evacuation. Even 5.8% of respondents still don’t understand about shelter or evacuation.

Many Indonesian had prepared shelter and evacuation spots, but one-third of Indonesian still hadn’t prepared any shelter or evacuation spot.

Q. Have you prepared communication tools or other ways of communicating so you can communicate with your family while a natural disaster occurs? (SA)

When a disaster occurs, communication is a vital need. At least, radio transmission is needed to inform about what natural disasters that happened and what kind of help they needed.

According to this survey. most Indonesian with a percentage of 67.8% said they had prepared communication tools. Unfortunately, 32.2% of respondents had not prepared communication tools for communicating if natural disasters occurred.

Summary

Indonesian have a concern about natural disasters threaten their surroundings in mind. They think that rain-related natural disasters were the most probable disaster that may happen, while some disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis also being anticipated.

They prepare some emergency stuff for natural disasters. Most prepared things are flashlight, drink, food, and blanket. Many Indonesian had prepared shelter and evacuation spots as well as a communication tool.

However, there were still many Indonesian whose natural disaster preparations is inadequate. In this situation, there must be socialization and guidance for this group through television, the internet and social media.

So that the unprepared residents will reconsider to prepare emergency items. So, when natural disasters occurred, the handling steps are clear. The number of victims can be minimized as well.
